So, we have been wanting to get a new dog but decided to wait until we got into a permanent home. However, an opportunity came about for us to get a dog now and we jumped on it. Jon found out about a study conducted by the VA (sponsored by DAV, Disabled American Veterans). They are opening the study to only eight people (the study is only in San Antonio). The study is to see if dogs can help veterans returning with PTSD. There is a certain criteria and Jon passed the initial screening a few days ago. Then he had his in person interview (a few hours long) and was approved to be apart of the study. They provide a dog (from the Humane Society), provide training, a kennel, heart worm meds for 6 months, food, collar, etc. Plus, they give you a few hundred bucks throughout the first six months. Plus, since it's considered a "Emotional Support Dog" it follows under the same rules as a Service Dog. Which means, we won't have to pay a deposit were we are living. The doctor scheduled to meet us at the Humane Society Monday to get the dog.
We couldn't wait (of course) and went to the Humane Society today to "look" at the dogs. We feel in LOVE with a dog that they named "Heart". And she is ALL heart for sure. She is by far not an active dog but is very affectionate and LOVES being rubbed. We definitely wanted a calm dog (unlike our last). Someone obviously trained her. Most important she is great with Sean; no problems with him touching her on her face, paws or legs. We took the girls to see her tonight and they feel in love too.
She is not spayed so Jon will officially adopt her on Monday but we won't be able to pick her up until Tuesday so she can be spayed. We are planning to visit often until then.
We haven't picked out a name yet but she is Shepherd/Lab mixed. Her ears and hair are that of a short haired lab but a face of a Shepherd. Her hair is tan/yellow with a hint of red.
